former Jesuit, senior New York newspaper executive, bartender, teacher of
Latin and Greek; husband and father, suburban homeowner; and client of several
psychotherapists, Jim Hewitt-became a student of alcoholism the day after
his release from a county hospital detoxification unit fifteen years ago
at the age of 52. Not content with the miracle of his recovery, he had to
know what happened and why. During the years of recovery from twenty-two
years of alcohol abuse, he scoured public libraries, college libraries, bookstores,
and relevant journals for information about alcoholism.
